Phil Benitez - Chef
Hailing from the foggy coasts of southern Nova Scotia, I discovered my passion for cooking early on after several heated discussions with my mother about what we should have for dinner. While she and I would eventually agree to chicken breasts and rice with salsa, as a younger man I began to crave new and exciting flavours. Learning how to handle a knife, combine ingredients, and generally make a mess in the kitchen at home gave me the confidence to try and cut my teeth in the restaurants of Halifax. In the past decade I’ve done everything from scrubbing pots and slinging pizzas to shucking oysters and fine dining, culminating with me working at The Canteen in Portland under Chef Renee Lavallee, who I owe many thanks and a debt of gratitude. Now you can find me here at Black Rabbit, learning the ropes and challenging myself to grow as a cook, while I strive to make memorable dining experiences for all our guests.
